ACADEMICS (and RESEARCH, see below) Major advances in contemporary medicine have reshaped the relationship between the fields of obstetrics, pediatrics and the surgical subspecialities. As a result, the unique needs of potential new mothers are best met by a multidisciplinary team of specialists. The IMFH has physicians whose expertise is in obstetrics with advanced (fellowship) training in maternal-fetal medicine; then there are neonatologists (working with specials needs and sick newborns) whose subspecialty training comes from pediatrics; and pediatric surgeons who have expertise from their advanced training with newborn babies. These different physician groups work closely together from an academic and research standpoint, thus boosting their professional knowledge applicable to the clinical setting. In this way the CONCEPT of the INSTITUTE mission can be depicted as below. The Concept: -- from high-risk obstetrical management to fetal medicine to medical care for newborn babies
The core research related to the IMFH is performed
in the USC
Division of Neonatal Medicine and the USC
Division of Maternal-Fetal Medicine at the University of Southern
California. Clinical and basic research investigations are conducted
under IRB-approved protocols that are reviewed and administered through
the auspices of the university. For information on research emphasis,
particular investigations or participation in research protocols,
